The eyelids are naturally positioned inside the iris or colored part of the eye. Eyelid retraction is when the upper eyelid is abnormally elevated or the lower eyelid is abnormally pulled downward.
There are numerous causes of eyelid retraction. Thyroid eye disease (Graves' Disease) can cause bulging of the eyes and eyelid retraction. Lower eyelid retraction can be from previous trauma or reconstruction following removal of a skin cancer near the eyelid. The most common cause of lower eyelid retraction in patients referred to our practice is previous cosmetic surgery.
Patients with eyelid retraction report dissatisfaction with eyelid symmetry, dry eyes, burning and irritation, red eyes, blurry vision and eye pain in the morning. If you have had cosmetic surgery and are experiencing any of those symptoms seek consultation with one of our oculoplastic surgeons.
