What Is Revisional Surgery?

Eyelids exist to protect the eye. Eyelid distortion or malposition following cosmetic surgery can lead to dry eyes, irritation, red eyes, tearing, discharge, or even severe eye infections. Many of our referrals come from other physicians who understand the subspecialty of oculoplastic surgery. Revisional surgery following complications of past cosmetic surgeries is complex and requires an immense understanding of eyelid mechanics. Dr. Connor’s years of experience in performing revisional surgeries makes him an excellent choice for correcting surgically caused complications.

Who Can Benefit From Revisional Surgery?

Those struggling with asymmetry, frequent infections, scarring, and other complications from previous surgeries can benefit from revisional surgery. Due to the specifics of individual patient concerns, different procedures may be undertaken to assure that those in need of this procedure get the best results. Those seeking to correct prior surgical mistakes can greatly benefit from a consultation with Dr. Connor.

How Does Revisional Surgery Work?

Revisional surgery can address poor results from primary surgery. However, this is one of the most difficult areas of oculoplastic surgery to master. Revision surgery’s difficulty comes from the complexity of correcting concerns while working with scarred planes and distorted anatomy. Unknown factors and complications can have a habit of appearing during surgery, making the procedure unpredictable. In addition, it is often hard to meet a patient’s expectations for the surgery, as many desire to recreate what was present prior to the first procedure.

What Does Revisional Surgery Treat?

Patients seek blepharoplasty surgeries on their lower and upper eyelids to eliminate the appearance of aging and exhaustion. However, problems arising from blepharoplasties can lead to aesthetic and/or functional problems for the patient, requiring revisional surgery. Common issues addressed through this correctional surgery include scarring, asymmetry, and excessive tearing. In the process of correcting surgical issues, Dr. Connor may also provide patients with additional benefits that their first surgeries failed to deliver. Issues such as under-eye bags, sagging or loose upper eyelids, and excess skin around the eyes can potentially be corrected.

What to Expect During The Procedure

Prior revisional surgery, Dr. Connor will take the time to make sure that you have a thorough understanding of what to expect from surgery. Unfortunately, though Dr. Connor will try his best to help everyone, damage done to your anatomy in a previous surgery will be the determining factor in the improvement of your situation. During a consultation, Dr. Connor will examine the damage that your tissue planes underwent and check to see if good blood supply and tissue movement is present in the region. All of these factors will affect the procedure and outcome of your revisional surgery. Finally even with a complete examination, it is not until the actual surgery that the true extent of the problem can be known.

What Is Recovery Like After the Procedure?

After your revisional surgery, some temporary swelling and bruising may be initially evident. However, the majority of women and men are able to return to regular, non-strenuous daily activities within a week of surgery. This varies depending on the extent of treatment. Most patients report little to no pain after their procedure, though if any discomfort is experienced, medication can be recommended. In order to give the treatment area ample time to heal, Dr. Connor recommends refraining from exercise or other rigorous activities for at least four weeks.

How Much Does Revisional Surgery Cost?

Pricing for a revisional surgery depends on the specific difficulty of your problems and the steps needed to get you the results you seek. Additional components that can impact the overall expense include the skill and experience of the surgeon, as well as whether or not complementary treatments are performed. To provide a custom cost estimate for corrective surgery, Dr. Connor will need to perform a thorough facial evaluation, examining for damage and blood flow to the treatment site. Dr. Connor can provide a cost estimate during an in-person consultation at our Palm Beach Gardens practice.

Does Insurance Cover Revisional Surgery?

Typically, blepharoplasty surgeries and corrections are considered cosmetic. However, this may depend on your specific coverage and treatment needs. Any attempt by patients or physicians to have insurance pay for a cosmetic surgery is considered fraudulent and can result in termination of policy or loss of the insurance contract for the physician. Additionally, this can potentially result in civil and criminal penalties. As such, we invite you to have a consultation with Dr. Connor before determining whether you can afford this procedure.
